Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor: The West Side Launch for Na Pali Coast Boat Tours

Kikiaola Harbor, formally Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor, sits two miles west of the Waimea River mouth near Kekaha on Kauai's west side. It is the closest harbor to the Na Pali cliffs, which is why several raft and powerboat operators depart from it. The bookable tours that list it as their harbor run, from a 3-hour Zodiac raft to a 4.5-hour power catamaran. This page covers where the harbor is, what it offers, which Napali Coast boat tours leave from it, parking, check-in and the status of the harbor after Hurricane Lowell. It also covers Waimea town, Kekaha and Polihale, so you can plan the rest of the day around a morning departure.

Quick answer Kikiaola Harbor at a glance

Kikiaola Harbor, formally Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor, sits two miles west of the Waimea River mouth near Kekaha on Kauai's west side, making it the closest harbor to the Na Pali Coast. It has a boat ramp, a loading dock, restrooms and 4 moorings for vessels with a draft under 3 feet. Four bookable tours list it as their departure harbor, priced from $215 to $275 per person. Hawaii Guide puts it about 45 minutes from the south shore and 2 hours from the north shore.

Key takeaways

The Harbor Closest to the Cliffs

Kikiaola is a small state facility on the dry west side of Kauai, and its location is the whole reason raft and powerboat operators use it.

Where It Is and What It Has

Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor lies two miles west of the Waimea River mouth near Kekaha, on the southwest shore of Kauai. The state Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation lists a boat ramp, a loading dock, restrooms and 4 moorings for vessels with a draft under 3 feet. That small footprint explains the character of the tours that leave here: short, fast, hard-hulled boats rather than the 60 and 65-foot catamarans you find at Port Allen.

The location matters because the Na Pali Coast runs about 16 miles along Kauai's northwest side and the cliffs rise up to 4,000 feet above the Pacific. From Kikiaola, a boat heads almost straight to the western end of the cliffs past Polihale. Hawaii Guide puts the harbor about 45 minutes from Kauai's south shore and 2 hours from the north shore. If you are staying in Poipu, the drive to Waimea is 18 miles and about 38 minutes. If you are staying on the north shore, leave early, because Princeville sits 31 miles and about 51 minutes from Lihue and the road cannot circle the island.

One point of confusion for readers: Kikiaola is the harbor, but Na Pali Riders asks you to check in at its office in Waimea first, not at the ramp. Check the addresses below before you go.

Tours Departing Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor

Several tours in the comparison list Kikiaola as their departure harbor. Two are Na Pali Riders Zodiac rafts that check in at the Na Pali Riders office at 9600 Kaumualii Highway in Waimea, one is a Napali Navigators snorkel boat, and one is a Na Pali Experience power catamaran. The table below compares them side by side, with prices exactly as they appear on the booking cards in US dollars.

None of these tours includes hotel pickup, and none of the raft tours includes a full lunch, only snacks like fresh cut fruit and chips unless the listing says otherwise. Parking at the harbor on the Na Pali Riders tours is $20 plus tax per vehicle for 8 hours, paid at check-in.

What the Raft Rides Are Like

The Na Pali Riders boats are 30-foot Zodiac rafts and the operator describes the ride as wild, sometimes fast and rough. The minimum age is 5, pregnant women are excluded, and guests with back or neck problems, recent surgery or medical conditions are also excluded. If you want the sea caves, this is the boat type for it, since raft tours are listed as the way into Waiahuakua and the other caves, best on morning departures, and cave entry depends on ocean conditions on the day. Waiahuakua is called the largest sea cave on the Na Pali Coast at about 1,155 feet long with a separate entrance and exit. From the water you also pass Honopu, with its sea arch, and Kalalau Valley, ringed by cliffs more than 2,000 feet high.

The Na Pali Experience power catamaran is a gentler option. It runs 35-foot power catamarans with a minimum age of 4, it is barefoot only, and each passenger gets a dry bag. The company asks guests to use reef-safe sunscreen only. Capt Andy's also runs a raft cave trip that departs Kikiaola from 8932 Kekaha Rd with $20 parking for 8 hours, on a 24-foot raft with a minimum age of 6, no snorkeling and no restroom or shade.

Closed After Hurricane Lowell

Read this before you book anything out of Kikiaola, because the harbor's status has changed since the storm.

What Happened and What It Means

Hurricane Lowell closed all Kauai state parks from September 8, 2026, including the Na Pali Coast. After the storm, DLNR listed Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor as closed until further notice due to heavy surf damage, and Beat of Hawaii reported the harbor closed with its condition still being evaluated. Capt Andy's raft tours depart from Kikiaola and were reported as affected by the closure. None of the tours listed on this page should be assumed to depart from the harbor until you confirm it.

What does that mean for a booking? Each of the Kikiaola tours carries a free cancellation window of 24 hours, and the booking platforms refund a trip that the operator cancels. Hawaii Guide advises confirming the vessel, the check-in address and the operating status with the operator before you drive. That advice is the single most useful line on this page. An operator whose home harbor is closed may move departures, delay them or cancel them, and the check-in address on your confirmation is the address that counts.

The main alternative harbor is Port Allen in Eleele, on the south coast, where Capt Andy's, Holo Holo, Blue Dolphin and Kauai Sea Tours operate from the main harbor. After the hurricane, the Port Allen launch ramp reopened on October 2, 2026 while slips and moorings stayed closed. Read the Port Allen page for the full picture of that harbor, and see the catamaran snorkel tours on the homepage for what leaves from there.

Kikiaola Harbor, Kauai, Hawaii

Waimea, Kekaha and Polihale

The harbor sits between two small west side towns and the road to two of Kauai's biggest sights, so a morning tour leaves you a full afternoon.

Waimea Town

Waimea had 2,057 residents in the 2020 census and holds a real place in Hawaiian history. Captain Cook arrived here on January 20, 1778 with HMS Resolution and Discovery, the first European contact with the Hawaiian islands. In the late 1700s and early 1800s the town served as a trading post for the maritime fur trade, whaling and sandalwood. The Waimea Town Celebration, established in 1978, runs nine days and honors Kaumualii, Kauai's last king.

Two things sit close to the harbor area worth knowing about. The Waimea Canyon road, state route 550, climbs 18 miles from Waimea town to Kokee State Park, passing Waimea Canyon State Park, which covers 1,866 acres with a canyon about 10 miles long and up to 3,000 feet deep. Check the park status before you drive, because the hurricane closures from September 8, 2026 covered Kauai state parks and status has been changing.

The Kikiaola (Menehune) Ditch is on the National Register of Historic Places since November 16, 1984. It carried Waimea River water to taro fields in lower Waimea Valley and has about 120 cut basalt blocks along roughly 200 feet of wall. Hawaii Magazine records that Vancouver described the aqueduct in 1793 as 24 feet high with a walkable wall top, though a road built in 1924 covers most of the ditch and only about 50 feet of wall shows today. Legend says chief Ola ordered the menehune to finish the wall in one night, paid one shrimp each.

Kekaha and the Beach

Kekaha, the town nearest the harbor, had 3,715 residents in 2020. A sugar mill operated here by 1884 and sugar farming ended in 2000. Kekaha also holds a strange record: Hawaii's only recorded train robbery happened here in February 1920, worth about $11,000.

Kekaha Beach Park has views of Niihau, and the town gets about 17.84 inches of rain a year, which is dry by Kauai standards. The Pacific Missile Range Facility sits 7 miles northwest of town.

Polihale State Park

Polihale marks the southwestern end of the Na Pali coast and is the most western publicly accessible area in Hawaii. Its dunes can reach nearly 100 feet, and the coastal plain averages about 300 feet wide. The only road in is a dirt sugarcane road with ruts and potholes where 4WD is preferable.

Swimming is safe only at Queens Pond, because the open beach has rip currents and drop-offs. Nothing is sold in the park, so bring water and supplies. The stretch of Na Pali coast between Polihale Beach and Kalalau Beach can only be reached by boat or helicopter.

Confirm the park is open before you go, since state park status changed after Hurricane Lowell.
